About Us
Our mission is to help people make better, more informed choices about the products they use every day. We do this by providing clear, unbiased, and science-based information about ingredients found in food products.
We take complex scientific research and regulatory guidelines and turn them into simple, easy-to-understand safety insights. Our goal is to make ingredient information transparent, reliable, and accessible so people can feel confident about what they use and consume.
CheckTheLabels.com is created and maintained by 4 individuals:
- We all have a foundational understanding of science from our studies up to the 12th standard, followed by the completion of our respective undergraduate degrees.
- We currently work as Data engineers and Product engineers.
We are not a regulatory authority, medical professionals, or certified toxicologists. Our aim is to collect and organize publicly available information and present it in a clear and easy-to-understand way. For every ingredient, we also provide references to the original sources so users can check and verify the information themselves.
How often do we start reading an ingredient label but stop halfway because it’s confusing? Many ingredients appear as numbers or codes, like E211 or E282, and it’s hard to know what they actually mean. When we try to look them up online, the information is often either:
- Too technical (long reports, PDFs, or legal documents), or
- Too simplified or sensational (fear-based content without proper context).
CheckTheLabels.com aims to fill this gap by providing a simple reference database with clear, consistent, and well-sourced information.
Depending on the available data, each ingredient page may include:
- What the ingredient is and why it is used
- Alternative names or codes (such as E-numbers or INS numbers)
- Where it is used (food, cosmetics, or both)
- Common products that contain the ingredient
- Safety information based on published assessments
- Regulatory status in different regions (e.g., FSSAI, FDA, EFSA, Codex)
- Limits such as ADI or maximum allowed levels (where available)
- FAQs and links to official documents
Our Editorial Approach
Evidence-first
We gather information from reputable, publicly available sources such as regulatory publications and scientific assessments. We do not make our own judgments or interpret scientific findings beyond what is necessary. Our goal is simply to present the information as it exists, without oversimplifying or changing the original conclusions.
Neutral language
We avoid using fear-based language or wording that creates unnecessary urgency. When we use terms like “low,” “moderate,” or “high,” they are meant only to summarize the information in context, not to make absolute claims.
Traceable references
Whenever possible, we include references so readers can check the original sources themselves. These may appear as direct links at the bottom of each ingredient page or within the explanation section for that ingredient.
Updates & review dates
Regulations and scientific assessments can change over time. We review our content regularly and may show a “Last reviewed” date on ingredient pages to indicate when the information was last updated.
About Scores and Classifications
Some pages may display simplified indicators such as scores, levels, or badges to help users understand complex information more easily.
These indicators:
- These are summaries of information, not final or absolute judgments
- They do not predict how a product or ingredient will affect a specific person
- This information should not replace advice from qualified professionals
- For a complete understanding, it should be read together with the referenced sources and regulatory information.
