About Us
Our mission is to empower people to make informed choices about the products they use every day by providing clear, evidence-based, and unbiased information about food and cosmetic ingredients. We distill scientific research and regulatory guidance into simple safety insights that are easy to understand. Our goal is to build trust through transparency, accuracy, and responsible interpretation of science.
CheckTheLabels.com is created and maintained by 4 individuals:
- We all studied basic science through 12th standard and later completed our graduation.
- We currently work as Data engineers and Product engineers.
We are not a regulatory authority, medical professionals, or certified toxicologists. Our goal is to organize and present publicly available information in a structured, easy-to-read format, with references for each ingredient so users can verify sources directly.
How many times does it happen that we start reading the ingredients label on a product but leave it halfway? It’s because ingredient labels can be confusing, especially hidden ingredients in the form of numbers, e.g., What does E211 or E282 even mean? And when you start searching online information is often either :
- Too technical (long PDFs and legal texts), or
- Too simplified and sensational (fear-based content without proper context)
CheckTheLabels.com aims to sit between these extremes by providing a reference-style database that prioritizes clarity, consistency, and sourcing.
Depending on the availability of data, on each ingredient page you may find:
- What the ingredient is and why it is used
- Alternative names and codes (E-number / INS etc.)
- Usage type (food / cosmetic / both)
- Common product applications
- Safety context based on published assessments
- Regulatory status across regions (e.g., FSSAI, FDA, EFSA, Codex)
- Limits such as ADI or category-wise maximum levels (where published)
- FAQs and links to official documents
Our Editorial Approach
Evidence-first
We compile information from publicly available, reputable sources, including regulatory publications and scientific opinions only. We do not make self-decisions, comprehend the scientific findings beyond necessity, or oversimplify the conclusions.
Neutral language
We avoid fear-based language and try to never use language that promotes sense of urgency. Where terms like “low/moderate/high” are used, they are meant to summarize information in context, not to make absolute claims.
Traceable references
Whenever possible, we include references so readers can check the original source. This could be in the form of direct links at the bootom of each igredient page or in explanation box of ingredients.
Updates & review dates
Regulations and assessments can evolve. We aim to review content periodically and may display a “Last reviewed” date on ingredient pages.
About Scores and Classifications
Some pages may display simplified indicators such as scores, levels, or badges to help users understand complex information more easily.
These indicators:
- are informational summaries, not definitive judgments
- do not predict individual outcomes
- do not replace professional advice
- should be read together with the cited sources and regulatory context
